The Eighth Wonder of the World!
I’d call it a Modern Classic. It is not to be compared with Matrix or any other CGI based film. The new King Kong is a great piece of cinematography, loyal to the original sotry. Even the credits are written in the original font! Some may call it long, but I’d say it was just about enough. Couldn’t have been shorter and shouldn’t have been longer than 187 minutes!
Acting is nothing like any other film I’ve seen recently. Carl Denham [Jack Black], the bad guy, is so bad, you want to punch him in the face! The good guy, Jack Driscoll [Adrien Brody], is so good, you want to punch him in the face either! It all is just the way it should be in classic fantasies. Ann Darrow [Naomi Watts] is as charming as Marry Poppins and the ape, when it comes to it, is as wild as, errm, well, King Kong. He is after all a King. Kings rule. So King Kong rules. The primitives aren’t friendly like National Geography documentaries! They kill for no reason. Just as they used to kill in the classics. Don’t you just love it this way?!
Music puts you right into the action scenes. It makes you to feel the breath of T-Rex behind your neck. It makes you feel the sadness of Kong in chains in Madison Square Garden. It makes you “feel the feelings” of a myth. It makes Kong real.
I was also surprised when I saw how an ugly giant gorilla was able to make such a deep connection with the audience. Some were crying in the end. Heck, I was cheering when he killed the T-Rex! Hahhah, I was almost certain that Ann is going to kiss Kong “after the ice skaitng in Central Park“. Shame she didn’t do so!
Extreme closeups of characters in the beginning and wide angle shots of Kong and other giants beautifuly point out the size of every character. You see the closeup of Kong, only when he is expressing a feeling. Fighting scenes are all wide angle, because you need to know who “the big boss” is. You need to know who the King is! It just couldn’t have been done any better than this.
Last but not the least, CGI was by far the best I’ve seen so far. Spiderman and Matrix with their cartoonish CGI can kiss Kong’s hairy ass goodbye.
All in all, King Kong is a must see. It was the best 3 hours I’ve spent on a film in a long time and I will recommend it to everyone. Once again, don’t think of it as an expencive film with fancy CGI. Think of it as a remake of a classic film. You have got to see how “beauty kills the beast“!
