An Other Cup!
I am a big fan of Cat Stevens’. I never get tired of listening to the beautiful lyrics of Moonshadow, Morning Has Broken and My Lady D’Arbanville. That’s why I tried to be open minded about his new album, An Other Cup and created a subflder for Yusuf Islam in my Cat Stevens MP3 folder and did not rename the artist!!! What I was hoping for was a new album with beautiful lyrics and brilliant crystal clear voice. The fact that the artist had a new name didn’t really bother me.
Anyway… Here’s how it sounded to me. Nice piano on the first track. Harmless lyrics. Not bad. I’d heard the second track on BBC Radio 2 many times, so I skipped it. Third track was kindda nice. Kindda nice, but nothing special. Forth track… Godawful boring! Skipped it after a little less than a minute. Fifth one… Oh crap! Just what I was worried about. He’s whispering something more lame than any Christian rock song I might have ccidentally heard. Sixth track was even worse. Seventh track, quite possibly the most awful version of Nina Simone’s “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.” In track eight, Yusuf thinks he sees a light. Well, good for him. Ninth track and kaboom! His second attempt to convert me. Some weird words of wisdom that if I wasn’t bored and listened to them, I’m sure that I’m going to end up in heaven! This one was actually even funnier than the fifth track. Tenth and eleventh tracks were also just as boring. Fortunately, there was no bonus hidden track!
My conclusion is simple. Yusuf’s new album is like an inflatable sex doll. It is shaggable, but not shagadellic!
