Red!

1999I’ve been wanting to post a very long rant on 300 and its ridiculous Iranian ciritics but instead, I’m going to write about red wine! It’s the Persian New Year in 5 days and I know at least two of my friends who are struggling to pick the right bottle for their hosts! I’ll keep it simple so that they too understand!

First thing’s first. A mini rant on Red vs. White. If you’re buying a gift, buy red wine! In my humble opinion, bringing a bottle of white wine to a party is just rude! It’s like walking in and shouting out like a maniac: “Hey, I got wine. Let’s get pissed and talk $hit!” But when you bring a bottle of good red wine, you are politely telling your host that: “This is yours! Enjoy it!” So, that’s that!

Like I said before, I’m not going to go into detail. Here is the listing of my favorite French red wines:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon: This is the one you should pick if you are buying it for a special person. Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are from warmer regins of France, Bordeaux in particular, and they taste a little spicy and sharp (cherry; pepper). Peak flavor is achieved after 5 to 10 years.

  • Merlot: Made of Merlot grape, it comes from cooler regins of France such as Chateau Petrus. A good merlot is dry, has a rich fruity flavor (berry) and is very smooth. 4 to 8 years is the perfect age.

  • Shiraz: Named after the city of Shiraz in iran, where the original grape comes from. Shiraz’s taste depends on the temperature the grapes were harvested in. For example, Australian Shiraz taste sweeter than those bottled in Côtes du Rhône in France. The warmer the temperature, the sweeter the wine tastes. Shiraz is best drinkable within 1 to 2 years.
  • To conclude, A good and classy wine to buy as a gift would be Cabernet Sauvignon/Bordeaux. A good red wine to enjoy by yourself and a special friend (note that this friend could be a steak!) would be Merlot. And finally, a cheap bottle to share in a restaurant when you don’t feel like spending too much is shiraz. One final word of advice: Don’t open a bottle if you know you are not going to finish it.
