Review Time!
I’ve been avoiding this since November. I’ll try to keep it short and simple…
American Gangster: Denzel Washington’s best since his Training Day. Russell Crowe’s best since A Beautiful Mind. That should sum it up.
Things We Lost in the Fire: One of the best dramas I have seen in a very long time. I’d say Benicio Del Toro deserves the Oscar. Halle Berry too was at her best since Monster’s Ball.
Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead: Under-rated. I never heard about it until last week. It’s an original piece that you should watch before wasting your time/money/bandwidth on any other bollockbuster!!!
Elizabeth: The Golden Age: Cate Blanchett is superb, as always. The rest is just history!!!
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford: The best Western drama I have seen in years. It’s also a beautiful piece of cinematography.
This is England: Brilliant stuff. Brutally real!
3:10 to Yuma: Another entertaining Western. Bang, bang, your dead!
Bee Movie: Good stuff. By far better than Shrek the Turd!
Mr. Brooks: Kevin Costners‘ best in years. And guess what? He’s the bad guy this time!
Beowulf: Visually stunning. But you can’t stop asking “why?!” If it’s CGI, why bother simulating famous Actors’ faces. If realism was the goal, why not using the CGI for the environment only and let the actors do what they do best? Why, dammit? Why?
A Mighty Heart: True story of the ugliest realities of our time. What I enjoyed most was the fact that the ugliness doesn’t dominate the story. Absolutely great stuff.
Love in the Time of Cholera: If you like García Márquez’s novels, you’ll like this movie.
The Kingdom: Surprisingly honest. The only bad thing was the only Oscar winner involved!!!
Michael Clayton: Yet another smart and brilliant movie with George Clooney in the lead. His best since Syriana.
The Mist: Die bitch, diiieee! I read the book and knew what was going to happen in the end. But still, it was entertaining.
Lions for Lambs: Tom Cruise beautifuly portraits himself: “an A-hole!” Redford fails miserably. It’s just not worth it. Not even if you too like myself don’t like Bush, war and politics. Not even if Robert Redford is one of your all time favorites.
Awake: Not bad. Not awesome, either!
Hitman: She’s hot! That’s about it!
We Own the Night: Entertaining. Still, stinks like ordinary Hollywood bollockbusters!
Saw IV: Whatever!
Next on my list are No Country for Old Men, I am Legend and Sweeney Todd. Also Atonement, The Great Debaters and There Will Be Blood.
